Hoyt Middle School
I believe every student can learn and grow. It is from this belief that I want to increase my abilities as an educator in my classroom. Being a Trailblazer means much more than trying out new technology and strategies. It means that I am doing all I can to provide my students with engaging resources and ideas to give them the best possible opportunities to learn and grow in our classroom. My goal is to use technology and stations to simultaneously give students new and different avenues to learn the standards we need to teach. Students who are behind their classmates can benefit from the additional support while those ahead can continue to grow without waiting for others.
Reflection & Findings:
Year two has started off well for my students and I. We've seen so much growth with our standards and with our student's fluency in our language arts classes. Our technology focus has worked well for many of our students. We've created playlists for different standards to allow students to learn ahead of schedule and to reteach ideas which we've covered in class.
Our classroom has continued to evolve. We now have tables rather than desks as well as more alternative seating choices including one stand-up desk which is now a popular place to learn. Students really enjoy sitting on the carpets during work time or lounging in the bean bags to finish their assignments.
We have had struggles with having to share technology since we don't have our own class set of laptops. I realize that technology doesn't replace solid teaching, but it certainly enhances it when all students can have access. We continue to try and "flip" some lessons, but the lack of technology at home limits some of our students from learning outside of the classroom.
All in all, 2016-2017 has started great! We're hoping to see improvement from our MAP scores from fall to spring and continue to work on student's comprehension, fluency, and writing skills.
