Harding Middle School
I want to create a paperless (or less paper-filled) environment and acclimate students to a 21st century learning environment. In this environment, student learning will be more personalized and students will have greater ownership of their learning. Using Flex model, I envision being able to divide the class to create two small groupings leading to half of the class participating in online learning and half receiving instruction from the teacher for more individualized attention and student-teacher conversations for check for understanding.
Reflection & Findings:
I am in the first steps of my action plan. My goal is to eventually have a classroom with traditional learning and the use of technology to help enhance the learning of the content. This is going to happen by using small group instruction, which include station rotations. I have been working on routines and procedures for small groups and rotations in our classrooms. The main way I have done this is by rotating through stations during one class period. One station always involves personalized learning goal through the use of technology and the others are involved in a different activity.
Grouping students in productive ways has been one of the biggest goals, so they can benefit best in a small group setting. I have primarily used behavior and student personality data in the past. I have started looking at the data on student's assessments to help group students with like abilities. Our students are also working on their computer literacy skills to help the autonomy of stations and rotations and using technology. Students are able to log into computer efficiently and we are still working at problem solving computer issues when they come up. Students are becoming comfortable with the time they are on the devices in regards to knowing their areas of weaknesses and focusing on helping those areas grow personally.
The next step is to create a multitude of activities for creating a personalized learning environment for students to control the pace at which they are learning and gaining new information for where they are at in their learning. As students learn the way they want, I will then have more freedom to focus on individual or group intervention.
